Part I: Caught in the Web of Societal Expectations

I have a personal narrative to share about discovering purpose, divided into three distinct phases.

Let me begin at the outset.

Many people embark on their journeys through life operating on automatic pilot, without much conscious direction.

This isn't due to a lack of ambition or effort on our part. Rather, it's the result of conditioning that pushes us to adhere strictly to what I call "The Standard Script."

You're familiar with it: pursue higher education, secure employment, climb the career ladder, accumulate wealth, and continue in that vein indefinitely.

I adhered meticulously to this prescribed path right up until age 28. To observers, my existence appeared entirely satisfactory and on track. Internally, however, a persistent void gnawed at me, signaling that an essential element was absent.

Despite executing every step flawlessly, I frequently awoke enveloped in a subtle but pervasive unease.

My routine consisted of relentless activity that ultimately propelled me toward no meaningful destination. It seemed as though I was merely enacting a blueprint designed by others, not myself.

What truly motivated my actions? What ultimate value did it all hold?

Gazing ahead, I pondered how much longer I could sustain this trajectory without crumbling.

Over time, the hollowness within grew impossible to overlook. I resolved to uncover a truly meaningful reason for being.

I vowed to myself: from now on, commit only to endeavors that imbue your existence with genuine worth and fulfillment.

Writing emerged as my natural inclination, drawing me inexorably toward it. I couldn't pinpoint the precise trigger that compelled me to begin.

There was simply an inner compulsion whispering insistently, "This is what you must do—write."

The moment I dove in, a surge of vitality coursed through me, invigorating every aspect of my being.

Crafting my debut book, Win Your Inner Battles, caused hours to evaporate unnoticed, as if time itself paused.

The lingering apprehension that had shadowed my mornings vanished entirely. Each day, I rose brimming with eagerness to advance the manuscript, setting aside all other concerns. Motivation and self-discipline flowed effortlessly, without force.

That project held such profound significance that I dedicated myself to daily writing sessions, unwavering in my commitment.

This initial success ignited a lasting passion that fueled me for almost ten years. Between 2015 and 2024, I harnessed that energy, consistently producing content and developing projects. A clear sense of trajectory guided my efforts.

Eventually, though, I encountered an unyielding barrier.

Part II: The Grip of Success Dependency

As my professional path gained momentum, a particular notion solidified in my thinking.

I convinced myself, "The ultimate objective is landing a publishing contract with a major house."

This mindset represents an elevated iteration of the societal script—an insatiable craving for validation through outward recognition.

I set my sights on securing a legitimate publishing agreement. By 2022, I achieved it with Portfolio Penguin for The Stoic Path to Wealth. The signing alone registered as a monumental victory.

The release arrived in 2024, achieving strong sales figures. It reached readers in 25 languages. I recouped the advance prior to its official debut. By all conventional metrics, it triumphed.

Yet, the truth about grand feats reveals itself starkly: they fail to transform your core self.

I anticipated some profound shift in my state of being. I couldn't articulate exactly what form that change would take.

This pattern resonates universally. We fixate on a target and convince ourselves, "Reaching it will alter everything irreversibly!"

In what manner? Our imaginations falter when projecting so far forward.

Rather than emerging renewed, I reverted to baseline normalcy. Post-launch, disorientation set in deeply.

Having fixated on scaling that particular peak for so long, summiting left me directionless in the aftermath.

I had attained financial autonomy after 14 years of deliberate effort. My published works stood as testaments to my dedication.

Paradoxically, for the first time in ages, the urge to abandon it all surfaced strongly.

"If the outcome leaves you unchanged, what's the use?" I questioned myself relentlessly.

Contemplating decommissioning my online platform, I confronted a harsh realization: I had conflated true purpose with fleeting achievements.

Exhausting your roster of targets invites stagnation and decline.

Part III: The Simplest Route to Renewal

June 2025 marked a pivotal turning point. My wife announced her pregnancy.

We resided modestly in a single-bedroom unit, embracing simplicity. To embody the parent I aspired to become, relocation became imperative.

The ensuing six months unfolded in a whirlwind of urgency: scouting properties, purchasing one, and overseeing comprehensive renovations. The process demanded total immersion and exhaustive energy.

By December's close, the transformation stood complete.

That inaugural evening in our freshly outfitted home, the familiar sensation of aimless drifting began to resurface subtly.

Our dwelling embodied every vision I had nurtured.

Predictably, my inner state remained unaltered. Pride in our collective accomplishment swelled, yet I remained the same individual, yearning for an avenue of creative expression.

This instance, awareness struck swiftly. I identified it as the inevitable emptiness following triumph.

Refusing to succumb to the downward spiral, I positioned myself at my workspace in the new residence and posed a single, pivotal query:

"What represents the most straightforward path back to purposeful endeavor?"

The response materialized spontaneously: Compose a daily letter to your unborn son until his arrival.

I chronicled my missteps, wisdom gleaned from key figures in my world, and insights I wished someone had imparted to me sooner.

This wasn't crafted for public consumption or profit. It constituted unfiltered personal truth.

In that moment, vitality reignited fiercely. It evoked the electric atmosphere of 2015.

Clarity dawned: blockbuster success proves unnecessary for purpose. Engaging in energizing labor that simultaneously benefits others suffices entirely.

Purely self-directed pursuits fall short of satisfaction. An element of positive influence on fellow humans completes the circuit.

That connection frequently eludes us.

Conclusion: Embrace an Eternal Creative Pursuit

Targets provide valuable orientation, yet they form a shaky bedrock for sustained joy.

Tying your sense of self to accomplishments guarantees post-victory plummets.

You risk ensnaring yourself in a cycle of escalating highs, perpetually chasing grander objectives and amplified acclaim merely to maintain equilibrium.

Purpose transcends mere attainment. It resides in the ongoing process.

This involves evolving into a superior version of yourself daily. It manifests as rising each morning confident in dedicating time to endeavors of personal significance—irrespective of external validation.

Milestones will still materialize. Victories persist. However, these emerge as beneficial byproducts.

The essence lies in the sustained effort itself. Envision an perpetual undertaking without terminus.

Shifting focus from final destinations to the act of construction infuses existence with abundance.

This richness permeates even the most routine moments.

After all, isn't that the true essence? Cultivating a sense of completeness in life, particularly amid the everyday ordinary.
