I have a personal story to share about discovering purpose, losing it, and then finding it again, divided into three distinct phases.

Let me begin by diving right in.

Part I: Falling into the Trap of Societal Expectations

The majority of people launch into adulthood operating on automatic pilot, simply going through the motions without much conscious thought.

This isn't due to a lack of ambition or effort on our part. Rather, it's the result of being conditioned from an early age to adhere strictly to what I call "The Script."

You're familiar with it: pursue higher education to earn a degree, secure a stable job, climb the corporate ladder for promotions, accumulate wealth, and continue down that predictable path indefinitely.

I meticulously followed this prescribed path without deviation until I reached the age of 28. To anyone observing from the outside, my life appeared perfectly on track and successful. However, deep down inside, there was a persistent feeling that something essential was absent from my existence.

Even though I was checking off all the boxes and doing everything by the book, I frequently awoke each morning with an unsettling undercurrent of apprehension and unease.

My daily routine consisted of endless activities and tasks that seemed productive but ultimately led to a dead end, offering no real fulfillment. It was as if I were executing a blueprint designed by someone else entirely, not tailored to my own desires or aspirations.

I began questioning the motivations behind my actions: Why was I investing my time and energy in these pursuits? What was the ultimate significance or value in any of it?

Peering into the years ahead, I couldn't help but wonder, "How much longer can I sustain this way of living before it becomes unbearable?"

Over time, the profound sense of hollowness grew increasingly impossible to overlook or suppress. I reached a turning point where I resolved to uncover a truly meaningful purpose that aligned with my inner self.

I made a solemn promise to myself: From this moment forward, commit only to endeavors that imbue your life with a profound sense of worth and authenticity.

This inner calling drew me toward writing, though I couldn't pinpoint the exact reason at first. There was simply an intuitive pull, a quiet voice within urging me, "This is what you must do—start writing."

The very instant I began the practice of writing regularly, a surge of vibrant energy coursed through me, invigorating my entire being.

When I embarked on crafting my debut book, Win Your Inner Battles, the hours melted away unnoticed as I became completely immersed in the creative flow.

That lingering dread that had haunted my mornings vanished entirely. Each day, I rose with an overwhelming enthusiasm and determination to advance the manuscript, to the point where all other concerns faded into the background. My motivation and discipline flowed effortlessly, without force or struggle.

The project held such deep personal significance that I showed up at my desk consistently, writing every single day without exception or procrastination.

That initial book ignited a powerful passion within me that fueled my efforts for almost ten full years. Between 2015 and 2024, I harnessed that momentum relentlessly, producing more writing and developing various projects. For the first time, I had a clear sense of direction guiding my path.

Eventually, though, I encountered an unyielding barrier—a point where progress stalled.

Part II: The Grip of Achievement Addiction

As my professional journey gained traction, a particular notion began to solidify in my thinking.

I convinced myself that the pinnacle of success would be landing a traditional publishing contract with a major house.

This ambition was essentially an elevated iteration of the same societal script, manifesting as a craving for validation and prestige from external sources.

I set my sights on securing that legitimate deal as my primary objective. In 2022, I finally achieved it by signing with Portfolio Penguin for The Stoic Path to Wealth. The signing alone brought a rush of satisfaction and triumph.

The book launched in 2024 and performed strongly in the market. It was adapted into 25 different languages worldwide. I recouped the advance payment even before official release day. By all measurable standards, it was an undeniable triumph.

Yet, here's the unvarnished truth about monumental achievements: they fail to transform who you are at your core.

I had anticipated some profound shift in my outlook or emotions, though I couldn't articulate precisely what that change would entail.

This pattern is all too familiar to many of us. We fixate on a lofty target and convince ourselves, "Once I reach that milestone, my entire life will transform irreversibly!"

But how exactly? We rarely have a concrete vision because our imagination struggles to project that far into the unknown.

Rather than experiencing the expected metamorphosis, I returned to a state of ordinary normalcy. Following the excitement of the book launch, a disorienting sense of being adrift washed over me.

I had devoted years to scaling that particular peak, and upon summiting, I found myself uncertain about the next steps or where to channel my efforts.

I had already attained financial independence after years of dedicated work. My published books were out in the world, gaining recognition.

And yet, for the first time in a long while, I seriously contemplated walking away from it all.

"If reaching these heights doesn't alter how I feel inside, then what's the use?" I pondered deeply.

I even toyed with the idea of closing down my entire online platform. In that moment of clarity, I understood that I had mistakenly conflated true purpose with mere checkpoints and accomplishments.

Without fresh milestones to chase, a gradual erosion of drive and enthusiasm begins to set in.

Part III: The Simplest Path to Rekindling Purpose

Everything shifted dramatically in June 2025 when my wife announced her pregnancy.

At that time, we were embracing a minimalist lifestyle in a modest one-bedroom apartment. To step fully into the role of father I envisioned, a change in our living situation was essential.

The subsequent six months became a whirlwind of activity: searching for the right home, completing the purchase, and overseeing extensive renovations. It demanded every ounce of my focus and energy.

By December of that year, the intensive project reached completion, and we moved in.

On our very first evening in the newly finished house, that familiar sensation of aimless drifting began to resurface subtly.

Our home now embodied everything I had envisioned and worked toward.

And predictably, my inner state remained unchanged. Of course, there was justifiable pride in our accomplishment. But I was still the same individual at heart, yearning for a meaningful creative pursuit.

This time around, I identified the issue right away. It was the inevitable emptiness that follows major victories.

However, I refused to let it escalate into a downward spiral. Instead, I positioned myself at my desk in our new living space and posed a single, pivotal question to myself:

"What is the simplest, most straightforward way for me to reengage in work that feels deeply meaningful?"

The response emerged clearly and immediately in my mind: Begin composing a daily letter to your unborn son, continuing until his arrival.

I poured my reflections onto the page—detailing my past errors, insights gleaned from key figures in my life, and wisdom I wished someone had imparted to me sooner.

This writing wasn't aimed at readers, sales, or public acclaim. It was purely an expression of my authentic experiences and truths.

In that moment, the spark reignited instantaneously. It transported me back to the vitality of 2015.

I came to see that grand successes like bestsellers weren't prerequisites for purpose. What truly mattered was engaging in activities that energized me intrinsically while also holding potential to positively influence others.

Purely self-directed efforts, without any ripple effect on those around me, left me unfulfilled. There needs to be that element of contribution or impact beyond oneself.

That's frequently the overlooked component in the equation.

Conclusion: Embrace an Everlasting Project

Setting goals provides valuable guidance and momentum, but relying on them as the bedrock of lasting happiness is a flawed strategy.

If you anchor your sense of self to accomplishments and trophies, you'll inevitably plummet into a void after each victory.

This creates a cycle of dependency on escalating thrills, where you crave ever-larger objectives and more resounding validation just to maintain equilibrium.

Purpose isn't defined by destinations or triumphs. Purpose resides in the ongoing process.

It's about the daily evolution into a slightly improved version of yourself compared to the day before. It's the assurance upon waking that you're dedicating yourself to pursuits that resonate deeply with your values, regardless of external recognition or applause.

Milestones and successes will still occur along the way—they're welcome bonuses. But they are merely byproducts.

The true essence lies in the sustained effort itself. Imagine committing to an infinite endeavor that evolves perpetually without a finish line.

When you release the pressure to "arrive" at some final state and instead immerse yourself in the act of creation and growth, your life begins to feel abundant and rich.

This fullness persists even amid the most routine, unremarkable days.

And isn't that the very essence of a truly fulfilling existence—to experience wholeness and contentment precisely on those everyday moments?
