Each morning, I make it a point to return everything to a clean slate, establishing a solid foundation for the day ahead.
Following a brief workout centered on stretching, I start the kettle for my morning brew and meticulously put away all the dishes and utensils. I take a moment to organize and neaten any items nearby, swallow my daily levothyroxine medication to manage my underactive thyroid, thoroughly clean my mouthguard to address my TMJ issues, draw open the living room blinds to flood the space with natural light, and mentally pledge to embrace a productive and meaningful day.
This morning sequence includes slight adjustments, particularly when I'm traveling. Although I typically rise at 5 a.m., early flights or similar commitments might lead me to omit or hastily complete certain elements of the routine.
Nevertheless, I discover profound comfort in restoring order to a neutral starting point before the uncertainties of a fresh day unfold. This practice reassures me that, at the very least, I'm launching from a recognizable and stable position. Regardless of the challenges or surprises the day presents, I can always revert to this grounded baseline once my tasks are complete.
Embracing Periodic Deep Cleans for Renewed Order
Beyond this daily ritual, I frequently participate in a more intensive form of resetting known as the deep clean, which elevates the maintenance to a comprehensive level.
Since I operate my work-from-home setup, I generally sustain tidiness through minor adjustments—like a quick tidy-up in one spot or a light dusting in another. However, despite these consistent efforts, disorder inevitably builds up in overlooked areas, necessitating more substantial interventions at regular intervals.
We schedule this deep clean approximately once every month. My partner and I split the responsibilities across our apartment, diving fully into a thorough regimen of sorting, scrubbing surfaces, dusting thoroughly, washing linens, and vacuuming every corner. While some of these tasks occur more frequently on a smaller scale, this all-encompassing approach results in a refreshingly pristine living environment that feels brand new, allowing us to savor that immaculate state for a day or two until everyday life gradually imprints its familiar patina once more.
Elevating to Seasonal Overhauls and Life Reassessments
Ascending to yet another tier is the extensive "Spring Cleaning" reset, which transcends mere cleaning to encompass a sweeping reconfiguration of both our physical surroundings and personal lifestyles.
At this stage, we engage heavily in decluttering through discarding and donating items. Rather than simply stowing belongings in storage or wiping down floors, we pause to evaluate our true necessities versus those accumulations that merely occupy space, collecting dust and squandering precious room.
This transformative process occurs roughly every quarter and often spans multiple days, occasionally stretching into a full week of dedicated effort. The rewards are immense, as it not only physically liberates vast amounts of space but also delivers a profound psychological unburdening that surpasses the tangible gains. Moreover, it prompts a vital reflection on our evolving goals, aspirations, and shifting priorities since the previous overhaul, equipping us with realigned inner compasses directed toward paths that authentically reflect our current selves.
These thoughts occupy my mind right now, as my partner and I prepare to embark on this uppermost level of reset. My thoughts are already alive with excitement over the opportunities and transformations it promises.
What elements in my life have outlived their purpose? In what ways do I wish to allocate my time moving forward? Which attachments am I clinging to out of obligation or because they suited a past version of myself that no longer aligns with who I am today?
Importantly, every tier of this resetting practice holds significant value, regardless of its scale. I'm often astonished by the substantial impact of even the simplest daily reset; its absence for just a handful of days unleashes a wave of disarray and mental fog that permeates all aspects of my routine, underscoring precisely why I've enshrined it as an indispensable morning ceremony.
